Your Brain May Be Listening to Your Metabolism

I like knowing the alternatives to medications.
Not because medications do not have an important place in healthcare. They absolutely do. But I believe it is worth understanding what else we can do to support the body's own biology, especially when we are talking about long-term metabolic and brain health.
One of the most interesting examples right now is the GLP-1 pathway.
You have probably heard of GLP-1 because of medications such as semaglutide, liraglutide, and exenatide. These medications were originally developed for diabetes and have become widely known for their effects on appetite, blood sugar, and weight.
But GLP-1 signaling does much more than influence hunger.
What does GLP-1 have to do with the brain?
Research suggests that GLP-1 signaling may influence processes happening inside the brain, including inflammation, energy metabolism, and the activity of microglia.
Microglia are essentially the immune cells of the brain. When they become chronically activated, they can contribute to an inflammatory environment that is not ideal for healthy brain function.
Interestingly, research suggests that GLP-1 signaling may help shift microglia away from a more inflammatory M1 stateand toward an M2 state, which is associated with repair and resolution of inflammation.
That has researchers asking a much bigger question:
Could improving metabolic health also help create a healthier environment for the brain?
Early animal and human research is exploring whether GLP-1 signaling may have neuroprotective effects and potentially influence conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. But this is still an emerging area of research. We do not yet have enough evidence to say that GLP-1 therapies prevent or treat neurodegenerative disease.
And this distinction matters.
You don't necessarily need a prescription to start working on the pathway
This is where I find the research especially interesting.
The body does not rely exclusively on a prescription medication to influence metabolic pathways.
Your food, movement, sleep, stress levels, body composition, and metabolic health all send signals throughout the body, including to the brain.
That is one reason I am so interested in approaches that support the body's natural ability to regulate these systems.
For example, exercise, adequate sleep, nutritional strategies, and ketogenic diets are all being studied for their effects on metabolism and brain health.
The goal isn't to find one magic pill, supplement, or diet.
The goal is to create an internal environment that supports healthy metabolism and helps keep inflammation under control.
Why I'm still excited about the ketogenic diet
If your goal is improving metabolic health and losing excess weight, I think properly implementing a ketogenic diet remains one of the most interesting strategies to explore.
But properly is the key word.
There is a big difference between simply eating bacon and cheese all day and following a well-designed ketogenic approach that emphasizes nutrient density, adequate protein, healthy fats, quality foods, and individualized nutrition.

My functional medicine approach
My approach is not about replacing standard medical care.
It is about layering strategies.
If someone needs medication, medication may be appropriate. If someone has a neurological condition, that deserves appropriate neurological care. But there may also be opportunities to improve the foundational factors that influence health every day.
Think about it as building layers:
Metabolic health
Nutrition
Movement
Sleep
Stress regulation
Ketogenic strategies when appropriate
Targeted supplementation
Medical care when needed
There is also fascinating early research surrounding other interventions, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy and compounds such as Lion's Mane, but the strength of evidence varies considerably. Some areas have much stronger human evidence than others.
That is why I don't recommend chasing every new headline.
Instead, I like asking:
What can we do today that supports the biology we already understand while keeping an eye on where the research is going?
The bigger picture
Perhaps one of the most exciting developments in modern healthcare is that we are beginning to understand just how connected our systems really are.
Metabolic health isn't isolated from brain health.
The food you eat doesn't just affect your waistline.Movement doesn't just affect your muscles.Sleep doesn't just affect your energy.Blood sugar regulation doesn't just matter for diabetes.
These systems communicate constantly.
The GLP-1 story is a fascinating example of that connection. Researchers started by looking at a hormone involved in blood sugar and appetite, and we are now learning more about how that same signaling pathway may interact with the brain.
We are still learning.
And that is exactly why I believe in keeping an open mind, looking at the research, using the tools we have today, and continuing to explore ways to support the body's own biology.
Your metabolism and your brain are not separate systems. They're having a conversation all day long.
The question is: what are you telling them?
